Factors Affecting the Sex Ratio of White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Fetuses in Arkansas

چکیده
Health of the mother is known to affect sex-ratio offspring in sexually dimorphic mammals. Both density-dependent and environmental factors (conditions at present, or seasonal conditions year before) could impact health mother. There are however two opposing hypotheses for whether a good should invest more strong son (that can father many offspring) daughter stay same area use resources). Fetuses from 1,208 female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were collected over 10-year period (2002-2012), across 75 counties Arkansas. For each adult deer, we estimated age, recorded live dressed mass, calculated kidney fat index (KFI), back-calculated date conception, number sex fetuses. Our objective was investigate Arkansas that tend produce male fetuses, addition investigating which conception those females. We developed generalized linear model, with binomial response (male versus fetuses), examine effects date, age mass mother, KFI on fetal ratios. found had greatest sex-ratios, heavier females producing fetuses (β = 0.217 ± 0.008, P < 0.001). Female body condition (KFI) did not sex-ratios. In addition, model doe, an interaction between variables, see how these physical properties influence date. significant relationship -0.699 0.190,

Novel hemotropic Mycoplasma species in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
Globally, hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. are emerging or re-emerging zoonotic pathogens that affect livestock, wildlife, companion animals, and humans, potentially causing serious and economically important disease problems. Little is known about hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. prevalence, host-specificity, or route of transmission in most species, including wildlife. DNA amplification by PCR targeting ...
متن کاملCongenital polycystic kidney in a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
Polycystic kidney and liver disease was seen in a stillborn white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawn. Bilaterally enlarged kidneys were characterized by severe dilatation of all renal tubules. Glomeruli were sparse, small, and located within a dilated Bowman's capsule. The liver was characterized by marked periportal fibrosis, biliary hyperplasia, and bile duct ectasia with dilated ducts...

The comparative cervical skin test for antemortem diagnosis of tuberculosis was done 169 times on 116 different white-tailed deer of known Mycobacterium bovis infection status. The sensitivity and specificity were 97 and 81%, respectively. The magnitude of change in skin thickness at test sites was not significantly influenced by dosage of inoculum, dissemination of the disease process, or repe...
متن کاملEhrlichia ewingii Infection in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)
Two closely related zoonotic ehrlichiae, Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. ewingii, are transmitted by Amblyomma americanum, the lone star tick. Because white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are critical hosts for all mobile stages of A. americanum and are important vertebrate reservoirs of E. chaffeensis, we investigated whether deer may be infected with E. ewingii, a cause of granulocytotropi...
متن کاملHyperkalemia in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
Sixty adult and yearling female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were collected in July 2008 (n=30) and March 2009 (n=30) from eastern North Carolina as part of a population health assessment. During July 2008, standard serum analyses revealed hyperkalemia in all deer sampled. In March, the effect of processing time as a possible source of the hyperkalemia was investigated. For a subs...
